Installing Pegasus
  1. During the installation process, carefully read and check which choices apply to you on the Select Components screen. If Internet Explorer is your main web browser, then check Install as a mailer for MS Internet Explorer for Pegasus to be the default mail reader.

  2. Near the end of the installation process, you will reach a window called Setting up mailboxes. Here an important is to be made: Will you use Pegasus for one or more E-mail accounts?
    • If only one E-mail address setting is used, then in the future the program will take you right to the main screen.
    • If you plan to use more than one E-mail account, you would first be prompted to sign in under a specific profile for a session.
These options are covered by the two top buttons of this window:

Assuming that you wish to use more than one E-mail address,
we will follow the procedure for setting up Pegasus for
multiple E-mail Account capability.

Setting Up Pegasus

Once you've reached the Create Initial Pegasus Mail Users window, you're ready to create your first profile.

  1. Click the New... button. In the User Details dialog box, type the word or name you wish to use to log into your E-mail profile session into the Username field, then your name in the Personal name field.

IMPORTANT: Make sure the option for Administrator privileges is checked for all profiles! This way, you will be able to revise any info as necessary.

  2. Click OK. If you just wish to work with he one profile for now, click the Close button.

  3. Start up Pegasus, and enter the username to access:

  4. Under the File menu, go to Network Configuration... to set up your E-mail properties

  5. In the General tab, type your E-mail address:

  6. In the Receiving (POP3) tab, type the following:

    • Put our Incoming server mail.nyct.net into the POP3 host field .

    • Your nyct account username goes into the User name field

    • Enter the necessary info in the Password field

    • In Check for new POP3 mail every, enter the amt of time for mail checks in number of SECONDS.

    • Be sure that Delete mail from host once successfully retrieved is checked.

  7. Now on to the Sending (SMTP) tab.
    • In the SMTP host field, put our outgoing server mail.nyct.net

    • If you like to have Pegasus send mail as soon as you hit the send button, then check Send mail at once without placing in queue. Note: It is customary for those who answer a lot of E-mail at one time to disconnect from the Internet once mail is retrieved. The person would type up all their replies, and hitting send brings everything into the mail queue. Then, once all the mail has been written, connection is reestablished, and Send all queued mail in the File menu is selected. If you answer a tremendous amount of E-mail at one sitting, you might wish to go this route and keep that box unchecked.

  8. Click the OK button.

Fine Tuning Your Pegasus Profile

  1. In the Tools menu, select Options...

  2. Starting with the General tab:

    • Put in the Personal name... field what name you wish to appear next to your E-mail address on outgoing mail.

    • Check any options below as you see fit.

    • Enter Name for folder for copies to self:

  3. On to Reader settings tab:

    • When reading most mail, Pegasus displays certain texts with color. You may change the settings to suit your taste, or leave the default as is.

    • Set any preferences for Handling HTML and Rich-text messages. You might actually wish to have Pegasus Show HTML directly:

  4. Now to the Sending mail tab.

    • For the When sending messages containing rich (formatted) text options, consider the pro's & con's:

      • Always remove formatting ensures that your mail can be read by any recipient.
      • Send richtext as required - this may make your mail look pretty to some, but unreadable to others. Also, new forms of viruses have been devised since fall 1999 to travel with formatted forms of e-mail and activate when opened.

    • Under Advanced settings, You might want to uncheck the selection Send enclosures instead of attachments (unlike what is displayed below).
Why? Well, sometimes if you wish to send a message with a picture or Word file, etc., the recipient may want to keep your writing, and either delete or save the attached file elsewhere. This way, the message and attachment are sent separately, one right after the other. The recipient may save one or both (or neither, as the case may be).

  5. Select the Reporting tab to determine how you would like Pegasus to notify you of new mail.

    • If you select the ...floating "Telltale" window, when new mail arrives, something like this will appear on your screen:

    • The ...icon in the Windows system tray looks like this:

    • If set to animate, the horse will flap its wings when mail arrives.

    • When you opt to Hide the Pegasus Mail taskbar entry when minimized, this means instead of a selection in the taskbar along the bottom of your screen, you would bring up the program by doubleclicking the horse icon in your system tray.

    • If you wish to play a sound to alert you to new mail, check the box to Play a newmail alert sound, then click the Select sound button beside it to locate the wav file you'd like to use.

  6. Go to the Message settings tab.

    • You might want to set the Message width to the standard 80 characters.
A tab width is customarily 5.

    • Look over the other options carefully, and check those which you are sure would apply.

Delivery Confirmation with Pegasus

One of the features which makes Pegasus so appealing is its capability to notify you when mail has successfully reached its destination. There are two types of confirmations you can request:

  1. Confirm delivery notifies you when the recipient's Internet provider has successfully received the e-mail.
  2. Confirm reading sends you a notice once the user has successfully retrieved his/her E-mail. (In the case of UNIX shell users checking e-mail via Telnet, it alerts Pegasus once the E-mail has been literally opened, and the status of the mail has changed in their Inbox.)

These selections appear as checkboxes in plain view, right on the composition window between the address and composition areas:

Folder Maintenance with Pegasus

When your mail starts to build up in the Inbox, you might want to sort them into categories. As with many mail programs, Pegasus uses the image of a desktop to help you picture and understand their system:

To make a simple mail folder:

  1. Either go to the File menu and select Mail folders..., or just hold the control key down and press "L".

  2. When the Folders window pops up, click New...

  3. When the Enter name for folder or tray dialog box shows up, enter the name of the folder you wish to create.

Make sure the Message folder selection is dotted.

  4. Click OK
It's that simple!

To create a tray, the procedure is similar:

  1. Access the folders dialog box as before.

  2. When the Enter name for folder or tray dialog box shows up, enter the name of the tray you wish to create.

Make sure the Filing tray selection is dotted.

  3. Click OK

To create a folder to place inside the tray, make sure the tray in question is highlighted, then select New..., then create a folder.

Make sure the Message folder selection is dotted.

  • Click OK. The folder will appear as a subdirectory of the tray. Whenever a folder is selected (and its icon looks open), you may generate a new folder for it in this manner:

And if need be, you can click and drag a folder in or out of a tray, or move it from one tray to the other.

    Enjoy!
